INTER SERVICE LADIES TWENTY20 CRICKET TOURNAMENT 2010
SPONSORED BY QINETIQ
The fifth Inter Service Ladies Twenty20 tournament was held at Burnaby Road, Portsmouth on Thursday 17 June 2010 hosted by the Royal Navy. The ground, aided by bright sunshine and a two week period of dry weather looked in immaculate condition, well prepared and decked in Service ensigns and flags. The event is sponsored by QINETIQ, who provide valuable support to Combined Services Ladies cricket, support so vital for its growth and future.
The first match of the day saw the Royal Air Force take on the reigning champions, the Army. The Air Force after winning the toss, fancied their chances at chasing a target and invited the Army to bat, an invitation the Army welcomed and capitalised on. Led by A Potgeiter, who scored a flawless 81 not out, they amassed a score of 194 – 1, a most respectable score for any team in 20 overs. The Army bowlers struck almost immediately in the RAF innings, R Hay taking 3 – 25 in 4 overs and Potgeiter 2 – 7 in her four, reducing the RAF to 87 all out in 19.3 overs.
Army Ladies | 194 – 1 (20 overs) | A Potgeiter | 81 not out |
Streete | 38 not out | ||
RAF Ladies | 87 all out (19.3) | R Hay | 3 – 25 (4), |
A Potgeier | 2 – 7 (4) | ||
Norris | 2 for 17 | ||
Army won by 107 runs |
Losing their first match meant that the RAF had to play in the second match against the hosts. The RN won the toss and batted, the opening pair of skipper E Boswell and H Garton providing a sound base on which the remainder of the team could build. Useful contributions from C Atkinson and B Chapman helped towards a total of 175 – 3 in 20 overs. In reply the RAF started slowly and never really gat anywhere near the required run rate, losing wickets steadily throughout their allocated overs. C Lewis and B Chapman were accurate and economical and the pick of the Navy bowlers, all of whom restricted the RAF to 95 – 7 by the close.
Royal Navy | 175 – 3 | E Boswell | 35 |
H Garton | 32 | ||
C Atkinson | 31 no | ||
B Chapman | 25 no | ||
Royal Air Force | 95 – 7 | C Lewis | 2 – 9 (2) |
B Chapman | 2 – 15 (4) | ||
Royal Navy won by 80 runs |
The final match Royal Navy v Army did not live up to expectations and became very much a one sided affair. The Army again batted first and with Potgeiter at the helm of their effort she steered her side to a total of 183 – 1 which included an unbeaten century from her. Replying, the Navy Ladies lost wickets quickly only Boswell making any significant contribution and a final total of 58 all out reflected the difference between the two teams.
Army | 183 – 1 | A Potgeiter | 110 no |
S Streete | 36 no | ||
Royal Navy | 58 all out | E Boswell | 18 |
Norris |
3 for 11 | ||
Hay | 3 for 13 |
||
Koff | 2 for 10 | ||

Army won by 125 runs and retained the Inter Service Ladies Twenty20 title. |

ARMY LADIES V OXFORD UNIVERSITY
03 JUNE 2010, SHRIVENHAM CRICKET GROUND
The Army Ladies played Oxford University at the Shrivenham cricket ground in warm and sunny conditions. A 40 over match was contested. The Army won the toss and elected to field first. As Oxford University were a couple of players short, the Army loaned them Pat ‘Patricia’ Legg, their coach as an extra player.
The Army applied good pressure early on and Oxford found it hard to get runs on the board. The hard work paid off with the combination of R Hay bowling and Captain E Hoff catching to get the first wicket in the 9th over for 22 runs. The bowlers continued to apply pressure and the next 3 wickets fell in the following 2 overs. Oxford had a bit of a rally when ‘Patricia’ came into bat at the half way point when the score was 48 for 7. Supporting the remaining batters, he helped Oxford put on a further 66 runs before A Potgieter claimed the final wicket in the first ball of the 33rd over. All the bowlers played well–of particular note: R Hay got 4 wickets for 21 runs from 8 overs, R Brown got 2 wickets for 6 runs off 4 overs and A Potgieter got 2 wickets for 10 off 4.1 overs. S Simpson and A Speer, both new to the team this year, each got their 1st wickets playing for the Army. Oxford scored a total of 114 runs
After refreshments, the Army went out to bat. Following the fall of the first 2 wickets for 16 runs, A Potgieter and E Koff steadied the ship and finished the game with an impressive partnership of 99 runs; A Potgieter got a very quick 63 from only 49 balls and E Koff got a very good 30 from 33 balls. The Army won the game in 16.2 overs and by 8 wickets.
In all it was an encouraging match for the Army, the first of our 40 over matches this season. Focus will now turn back to T20 preparation for the T20 Inter Services later this month.
